In their post The Art of Book Covers (1820–1914), the folks at The Public Domain Review treat us to some of their 19th Century favorites.

And in doing so, they also draw attention to a pivotal time in the history of the book industry.

The book cover is taking on added role as “the book transforms from a largely hand-made object to a mass-produced product.”  Book covers no longer serve merely as protection for the precious pages within. Instead, they become “a key platform through which to communicate and sell the book.” Added to that “a totally new artistic space” opens up for illustrators and designers!
