ATG Quirkies: Books for bored guerrillas

You might be surprised but according to this post in the Paris Review, Cuban revolutionaries Che Guevara and Fidel Castro were both avid readers.

Evidently, Che advised aspiring guerrillas “to carry edifying works of nonfiction despite their annoying weight” observing that “good biographies of past heroes, histories, or economic geographies” will distract them from vices such as gambling and drinking.”

And Fidel was a big Hemingway fan who claimed that he studied the 1940 classic For Whom the Bell Tolls for tips on guerrilla warfare.

(Thanks, as always, to John Riley of Gabriel Books for providing ATG Quirkies
