Emily Temple at the Literary Hub website seems surprised that aspiring book hoarders “only have to own one thousand books to qualify” for the title. According to Ms. Temple that total “seems a bit low” and to prove it, she provides this list of the 10 famous book hoarders who’ve manage to amass significantly larger collections than that.
At the top of the list is Karl Lagerfeld who is in a class by himself. No one else comes close to his 300,000 book collection. The nearest competitor is George Lucas with his Lucasfilm Research Library which numbers a comparatively meager 27,000 books. Although it must be admitted that Mr. Lucas also has “over 17,000 films, as well as photographs, periodicals, press clippings, and more.” Priceline founder Jay Price comes in third on the list with around 20,000 titles. Other names in Ms. Temple’s top ten make up an eclectic mix ranging from Michael Jackson to Ernest Hemingway to Harry Houdini.
