ATG Quirkies: Are Emojis the New Body Language?

by | Sep 5, 2017 | 0 comments

This post in Nautilus by Vyvyan Evans acknowledges the incredible growth in the use of emojis in digital communications. In fact, he notes that they have become so prevalent that some cultural critics fear that they undermine the use of real language and are a “huge step back for humanity.”

Fortunately Mr. Evans, takes a far more nuanced view that makes some interesting reading. He marshals a compelling argument that emojis are the non-verbal communication of the digital world and can enrich what is otherwise “impoverished and, on occasion, emotionally arid.”

(Those who are really interested will want to explore Mr. Evans new book The Emoji Code: The Linguistics Behind Smiley Faces and Scaredy Cats from which this post was excerpted.)
