ATG Quirkies: Get In On The Latest Academic Field: Boredom Studies!

by | Jul 22, 2016 | 0 comments

According to Randy Malamud, reporting on the Times Higher Education website, there are some academics who are evidently “bewitched by boredom.”  Mr. Malamud attended “the University of Warsaw’s third annual Boredom Conference” where a small but devoted collection of “philosophers, psychologists, education specialists, sociologists, linguists and others” held forth on the intricacies of being bored.

He also claims that they have hit upon a novel way to keep the mind numbing yakking to a minimum.  Every session comes to a close “promptly upon the waving of  toy giraffe (slow rocking at the five-minute mark, vigorous shaking at time’s up).  According to Mr. Malamud “the boredom crowd have hit upon a winner here: it is impossible to continue prattling on in the face of a robustly oscillating stuffed animal.”
