Alison Flood of the Guardian reports on a surprise bestseller. Norwegian Wood by Lars Mytting has lit up the charts by showing armchair woodsmen all they need to know about “chopping, stacking, and drying wood the Scandinavian way.” Ms. Flood goes on to say that last month “Norwegian Wood soared to No 2 on Amazon’s UK bestseller chart” surging past Jamie Oliver’s latest culinary masterpiece, selling more than 20,000 copies. First published in 2011 in Norway …, “the book has sold 300,000 copies internationally, and is translated into 10 languages.”
Author Lars Mytting touts wood chopping and stacking as an antidote to today’s sedentary, digital lifestyle. “Chopping wood is so extremely different,” he said. “It’s a hands-on experience, which is only you, with simple tools, and very organic material, old trees…”
Of course, if you want to learn more about the other fulfilling rewards of the woodmen’s way of life, you’ll probably need to get a hold of his book.
