Rumor of the day

So many Rumors and I am way behind. Here are a few.

Was interested to see that, in the midst of all the gloom and doom about newspapers, Amazon has launched a wireless Kindle DX with a tabloid-fomat for ease of reading digital newspapers and magazines. Apparently, The New York Times and The Washington Post are planning to launch pilot editions for the Kindle DX this summer. As they say, the South will rise again!

And watch for Cris Ferguson’s upcoming article in ATG, June 2009 (v.21#3), “The Demise of the Print Newspaper.”

And, speaking of the NY Times, see this recent article from the New York Times --
Google Book-Scanning Pact to Give Libraries Input on Price,” by Miguel Helft. Apparently Google has signed an agreement with the University of Michigan that gives some libraries input over the prices that might be charged for the digital library that could be the outgrowth of the proposed book-scanning settlement.

Y’all. I have lots more, but grandson Trifon is awake and I have to go … Have a good Memorial Day. And I will try to be back tomorrow.

Visitors and Match Day

IT has been a whirlwind few weeks since we last spoke. Lots of company. My daughter-in-law, Lindsay, and grandson, Trifon, came to visit from Savannah. Trifon is now 15 months old and has 5 teeth. He loves to eat and he is talking up a storm though it's still hard to understand what he is saying. I am sure that will change soon enough! Lindsay and Trifon were in town to attend first-hand my daughter Ileana's Match Day. My son Raymond could not come because he had to work! : ( Match Day is when MD students all over the country learn where they will do their residencies for the next three years. It was an exciting, but also tense, event as no one knew whether or not they will get their choice of residency. But as luck would have it, Ileana got her first pick -- MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) in Charleston is where she will spend the next three years. This means that we will not have to help her pack up and leave the area so we are happy.

Last weekend was also a special day at the College when students who have been accepted to the College for next year could come for a preliminary visit to see if this is the place they really want to come to attend college. There were 1,000 students here and it was very busy downtown and at the Library.

Spring has definitely sprung in Charleston. Today it is in the low 70s, the sun is shining, and everyone is smiling. Happy Spring!

Grandmothering

Am learning about caring for a baby again. My grandson Trifon has been visiting since Friday morning (without his parents who are on vacation with friends at the isle of Palms). He is a handful but very very cute. We are having lots of fun. He is crawling everywhere and into everything and he's just 8 months!

We returned from Wilmington on Friday morning just in time to go to the airport to pick up Trifon and parents. We had visited my father-in-law in Wilmington who has endocarditis. He appeared to be doing better but has since had a stroke and is in a coma. Very sad.

Tomorrow we do not have the day off so it's business as usual except that I will be taking the day off anyway. Happy Labor Day to all and especially to those of you who have the day off!
