Amazon's Kindle

In the April 2008 issue of Against the Grain, the Techonology Left Behind column discussed the applications of Kindles in libraries. Does your library have a Kindle? If so, how are you using your Kindle? If you don't, what has kept you from buying one? (Money? Access restrictions?)

My own institution, Furman University, has discussed buying one, but has not yet moved beyond the discussion phase. In part this is because of timing. When we had the money, they weren't available. Now that they might be available, it is the end of the fiscal year and we don't have the money. Our plan is to purchase one to play with. We have no plans for lending as of yet.

We have posted a new poll on the front page to see how many libraries have bought a Kindle, and we have created a new forum where you can chime in about and tell us what you think.

2008-04-09 We currently do not have any way to offer IP access to our subscribers, we are investigating ways to implement this but it will not be implemented in the near future. Please remember that in order to have an online subscription, you must be subscribed to the print subscription and have given us a valid email address. Simply let us know if you are a print subscriber and are interested in getting an online subscription.
