Academic publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) has appointed David Clark, Senior Vice President for Health and Medical Sciences at Elsevier, as the new Managing Director of its Academic Division. David will succeed the outgoing Managing Director, Tim Barton, who leaves OUP in September after 25 years.

David joined Elsevier in 1996 as a Social and Behavioural Sciences publisher. He subsequently led three of its divisions as a Senior Vice President―Physical Sciences, Life Science and Social Science, and Health and Medical Sciences. Prior to his time at Elsevier, he worked at HM Treasury and Edward Elgar Publishing.

David will start his new role in January 2018.


KnowledgeSpeak also reports that “digital preservation service Portico has announced that its director of publisher relations, Stephanie Orphan, has been elected by the members of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) to serve on the board of directors for a term of three years.

OASPA’s aims to support and represent the interests of Open Access journal and book publishers globally in scientific, technical, and scholarly disciplines by setting standards, supporting the development of business and publishing models, educating the research community and the public on the benefits of OA journals, and other initiatives.

Joining the 10-member board this year are also Eelco Ferwerda (OAPEN), Paul Peters (Hindawi), and Franck Vazquez (MDPI).


BusinessWire reports that VitalSource Technologies LLC, …, is pleased to announce the hire of Eric Kuennen as its new Vice President of Professional Learning. In his role, Kuennen will lead VitalSource’s efforts to enable customers’ and partner companies’ professional learning.

He held numerous roles during his time at Pearson, including oversight for corporate, association, government, EQUELLA, for-profit schools and third-party partnerships like VitalSource. Crystal Stone joins SSP as General Manager

In addition ,KnowledgeSpeak reports that “the Society for Scholarly Publishing has announced Crystal Stone as the new General Manager. Crystal is an accomplished association management professional with more than 12 years of expertise in helping organisations and volunteers reach new levels of success.

The position of General Manager focuses on the day-to-day operations aspect of the SSP and manages the multiple projects and staff that drive the organisations goals forward. Crystal’s skill in improving efficiency and staff development are an excellent fit for the needs of the society. Prior to joining Kellen in 2015, Crystal worked in a variety of non-profit settings including foundation management, religious organizations, and stand-alone professional membership associations.
