NISO Members elect new leadership for 2017-2018 term

According to Library Technology Guides “members of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) have selected their board’s leadership for the 2017-2018 term, which will begin on July 1, 2017. Keith Webster, Dean of University Libraries at Carnegie Mellon University, has been elected as the new Vice Chair. Greg Suprock (Apex CoVantage), Miranda Walker (Wolters Kluwer Health), and Robert Wheeler (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) have also been elected as Board Directors.

“These new appointments bring significant library, vendor, and standards experience to NISO’s board, and I look forward to working with this talented and forward-thinking group,” says NISO Executive Director Todd Carpenter. “Our current portfolio of work will benefit enormously from the diverse perspectives the new members will bring to the organization.”

As well as his position as Dean at Carnegie Mellon, Keith Webster has a courtesy academic appointment at the University’s H. John Heinz III College. He previously held positions as Vice President and Director of Academic Relations and Strategy for John Wiley and Sons and Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Queensland in Australia, leading one of the largest university and hospital library services in the southern hemisphere. Earlier positions include University Librarian at Victoria University in New Zealand; Head of Information Policy at HM Treasury, London; and Director of Information Services at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London. He has also been a leader within NISO, having served as a Director and most recently as NISO’s Treasurer…

Miranda Walker is a senior publisher at Wolters Kluwer Health, and former Publications Director at INFORMS, where she led the society’s self-publishing efforts of business, engineering, and applied math publications. In her 15 years in science publishing, she has had opportunities to see NISO standards at work from the vantage points of an executive, a production manager, and in an editorial office. She served on the Crossref Board of Directors from 2011-2014, where she was also a member of the Executive Committee.

Greg Suprock has worked in scholarly publishing for over 20 years. He has been involved as a vendor and publisher on NISO’s work with NLM and JATS XML, Z39.50, OpenURL, and DTB. He previously worked as New Technology Director for Nature Publishing Group and has been a member of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Education Committee and is a current SSP Board Member.

Robert Wheeler has 20-plus years of STM/STEM publishing experience ranging from the front end of production through online publishing. He is currently the Director of Publishing Technologies at ASME, focusing on all aspects of Codes and Standards publishing, and co-chair of the NISO STS Working Groups. He worked at AIP as the Product Manager and Operations Manager of the online publishing platform, Scitation, and the Production Operations Support Manager for its in-house typesetting division.
