ATG Quirkies: Time to Check That Spam File

this house of griefWhy? Well like Australian author Helen Garner you might find a lucrative surprise hiding in all of that junk mail. Ms. Garner realized that she had won the Windham-Campbell prize for writers when she checked her junk mail and saw an email from Yale University. At first she thought it was a scam but after doing a little research she discovered that she had been awarded the $207,000 literary prize. Ms. Garner was among nine other authors who got a similar surprise.

Garner was recognised for her nonfiction writing, with particular mention given to her 2014 work This House of Grief, which followed the trial of a man accused of deliberately drowning his three young sons by driving his car into a dam. Her upcoming collection of essays, Everywhere I Look, will be released late March.

(Thanks, as always, to John Riley of Gabriel Books for providing ATG Quirkies!)
