This sounds like a fun challenge for the collection development librarian at Paul Smith’s College in upstate New York. Last year, the 1,000 undergraduates at this small private college nestled in the Adirondacks were given the opportunity to minor in beer.
But it turns our that developing a collection to support the curriculum could be serious stuff!
There is more to the minor than learning how to brew your favorite lager. “Students in the program take … an introduction to entrepreneurship, advertising, and promotion, a course on food chemistry (understanding how food reacts in a chemical makeup, and the basics of brewing and fermentation), … and a course on the business of craft beer (learning how to make money off of the product), along with other elective courses on the food and beverage industry…”
