The folks at the Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro, VT have come in to a unexpected windfall. A gas station attendant and janitor left the bulk of his estate to the library and a local hospital.
That may not sound like a big deal until you realized that unbeknownst to anyone, Mr. Ronald Read had amassed a fortune of $8 million! The library’s cut – a cool $1.2 million.
“It was a thunderbolt from the sky,” said the library’s executive director, Jerry Carbone. While a surprise, he said the gift made sense once he learned more about the quiet, shy library patron appropriately named Read.
“Being a self-made man with his investments, he recognized the transformative nature of a library, what it can do for people,” Carbone said.
