LCA Files Brief on Behalf of Georgia State
District Dispatch reports that “the Library Copyright Alliance (LCA) has filed an amicus brief (pdf) in support of Georgia State University in the appeal of Cambridge U. Press et al. v. Mark P. Becker et al. In its brief (pdf), LCA argues that GSU’s e-reserves policy represents the widespread and well-established best practices of fair use that includes limitations to ensure that the use of course materials is fair. The case will be heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit…”
District Dispatch also report that “the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to pass a bill that will update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA). ECPA last updated in 1986, does not adequately address the digital world. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act Amendments Act of 2013 ( S. 607) proposed by Chairman Leahy (D-VT) will reform this outdated privacy law by providing suitable privacy protections to both email and cloud storage…”
In case you missed it “the staff at LibraryScienceList.com searched the most popular social media platforms looking for libraries that are actively using their accounts to promote library events, notify students of new materials, or interact with patrons in other ways. We ended up with a list of 442 college and university libraries, which were evaluated based on their level of activity on various platforms. The highest possible score was 100, with 32 points for Facebook, 25 for Twitter, 18 for YouTube, 7 for Pinterest, 4 for Google Plus, and 14 for Flickr…”
“OCLC Global Council met in The Hague, Netherlands, this week to discuss the opportunities and challenges libraries face in an increasingly global environment and the importance of international cooperation. Global Council elected leaders for next year, elected a new trustee and announced results from regional council elections. Council also accepted a report and recommendations by the Global Advisory Group on Credits and Incentives…”
