Professional Development Opportunities from RUSA-MARS; Social Sciences Librarians Boot Camp; ALCTS; WILU; and EDUCAUSE.

When: Monday, March 25, 2013; 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, US/Eastern

Many new library spaces, such as learning or information commons, lend themselves to providing both library and non-library services to students, a situation that provides its own challenges and opportunities. If you have such a space or are planning to develop one, the RUSA MARS LSS Committee invites you to join us for a free online open meeting on the Learning Commons on Monday, March 25 from 1-2:30PM EST.

While the event is free we ask that you register online at: http://learningcommons.eventbrite.com. After you register, you will receive a link to join the meeting. Space is limited so be sure to register in advance.

This online session will bring together a variety of teaching and learning professionals to begin to address challenges and opportunities related to working with emerging technologies and innovations around open educational content. The session will be valuable for:

  • Information technology professionals
  • Learning technologists and designers
  • Faculty members and instructors
  • Administrators
  • Librarians
  • Others functioning in related roles

On Friday, June 28, at the 2013 ALA Annual Conference, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) brings you “Techniques for Electronic Resource Management (TERMS): Crowdsourcing for Best Practices.”  This all day preconference, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., introduces attendees to best practices in TERMS.   Register through the 2013 ALA Annual Conference website. The cost for each:  $219 for ALCTS members; $269 for ALA members; $99 for retired members and students; $319 for non-members.  Select event ALC4.

TERMS: techniques for electronic resource management has been a crowdsourcing experiment to encourage worldwide librarians to share their best practices and workflows of electronic resource management freely. We invited interested librarians via social media venues such as Facebook, twitter, Tumblr and a wiki. Come learn how this experiment worked and participate in the development of capturing the best practices of electronic resource management. The TERMS Library Technology Report will be made available to attendees.

This preconference is presented by Jill Emery, Portland State University (Ore.) and Graham Stone, University of Huddersfield, Huddersfield (U.K.)

For more information, visit the ALCTS preconference webpage.  For questions, contact Julie Reese, jreese@ala.org.

Registration is now open for the 3rd annual Social Sciences Librarians Boot Camp.

Where and when: Tisch Library at Tufts University, Medford MA, Friday, June 7, from 8am-4:30pm with a post-camp reception (open bar and appetizers) from 4:30-6:00pm. Breakfast and lunch will also be included. The registration fee is $60.

This year’s Boot Camp kicks off with a panel of experts sharing their research on responses to disasters, from hurricanes to financial crises. Following this a panel of three data librarians will each offer their take on data librarianship for the non-specialist.

After lunch you’ll be able to choose from breakout sessions on topics such as legal reference, open source tools for government data, Roper iPoll, and Mendeley and Zotero. The breakout sessions will be repeated, allowing you to attend two.

Join us in Fredericton, New Brunswick for an exciting three days (May 8-10, 2013) focused on teaching in a library context. Our theme – Synchronicity: The Time is Now – reflects the increasing need for Instruction Librarians to balance a myriad of seemingly competing demands. Presentations will  consider what it means to provide timely information literacy programs in a world of synched devices, decentralized instruction, and information overload, all while serving institutions in flux.

Registration is limited and spots are disappearing quickly.  The early-bird registration deadline is April 5th.

Join us April 3 and 4 for the ELI Online Spring Focus Session 2013, ”Learning and the Massive Open Online Course,” where we will engage the teaching and learning community in exploring this new online course model. Tour institutional examples of MOOCs, various instructional designs and delivery models, processes, methodologies for setting up and evaluating the model, and implications for teaching and learning.

Hosted inside an Adobe Connect learning environment, this virtual event will be much more than your usual online seminar. You’ll exchange ideas and collaborate interactively with the ELI community—all without leaving your institution. You’ll also receive all the resources and guided activities you need to help frame discussions and organize team events locally in your department, college, or institution.
