Reform(aliz)ing Copyright at Berkeley

17th Annual BCLT/BTLJ Symposium: Reform(aliz)ing Copyright for the Internet Age?
April 18-19, 2013
Claremont Hotel
Berkeley, CA
Visit http://www.law.berkeley.edu/formalities.htm for more information.

Hosted by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, the Berkeley Technology Law Journal, the Institute for Information Law (IViR) and the Copyright Society.

Copyright formalities, such as registration of claims and placing notices on copies, may seem outdated, pedestrian, and… well… boring. They are anything but. Formalities, which in the past three decades have largely disappeared from American copyright law, may be about to stage a comeback. Why? Because copyright formalities may be one of the most important strategies for reconciling copyright law and the challenges of the digital age. This conference will consider, among other things, the useful role that formalities can play in addressing today’s copyright challenges, what kinds of formalities might best serve the interests of authors and of the public, economic considerations posed by formalities, the need for appropriate technological infrastructures to support new formalities regimes, and some constraints that the Berne Convention may pose for the design and implementation of new formalities regimes.

Atlanta Area Bibliographic Instruction Group (AABIG) 12th annual conference

The Atlanta Area Bibliographic Instruction Group (AABIG) 12th annual conference will be held on May 17, 2013 at the Mercer University in Atlanta. This year’s theme is Beyond Face Value: Asserting the Value of Instruction and Making Instruction Valuable. As the U.S. president and the Georgia governor push increasing student success rates, it is more important than ever that libraries maintain and advocate their value.

This year, the conference will focus on the practical and new ways librarians are affirming their worth to their institutions through effective instruction, assessment, and marketing. AABIG invites proposals for 20 and 45 minute sessions that address this theme. The committee particularly invites submissions from public and academic librarians, school media specialists and individuals from diverse backgrounds. Lively and interactive sessions are preferred.

Ideas include but aren’t limited to:
- effective instruction, outreach, and assessment methods
- effective strategies for online and face-to-face instruction
- practical techniques for advocacy/marketing toward external stakeholders
- innovative techniques, examples, and pedagogy to intrigue and entice students

Proposal Deadline: March 15, 2013. Please direct further questions to Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes, current AABIG Program Chair

OAI8, the 8th Workshop on Innovations in Scholarly Communication will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st June 2013.
