Library Copyright Alliance Submits Comments on Orphan Works
The District Dispatch reports that “on Monday, January 14, 2013, the Library Copyright Alliance (LCA) (whose members are the American Library Association, Association of Research Libraries and Association of College and Research Libraries) filed comments with the U.S. Copyright Office in response to their October 22, 2012, Notice of Inquiry about the current state of play with orphan works and mass digitization…
In its comments, LCA explains that “significant changes in the copyright landscape over the past seven years convince us that libraries no longer need legislative reform in order to make appropriate uses of orphan works.” Specifically, two key developments make it possible for libraries to engage in mass digitization and other projects that involve orphan works:
- Court decisions have further solidified libraries’ rights under fair use; and
- Libraries have successfully engaged in a range of projects involving orphan works and mass digitization…”
Citing a press release InfoDOCKET reports that “Grey House Publishing will become the publisher of the print editions of the Salem Press product line under a new exclusive license between EBSCO Publishing and Grey House… Salem Press has a long tradition of publishing highly regarded, and well‐reviewed reference content. New editions of these reference resources will continue to be derived from the EBSCO‐managed editorial program…”
CRL Welcomes Eight New Members
“As of January 1, 2013, CRL’s FY 2012-13 membership total has reached a historic high of 270. This number includes the following newly enrolled members:

- Lenhardt Library of the Chicago Botanic Garden
- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archive
- Carthage College
- Northeastern University
- Presbyterian College
- Kennesaw State University…”
OverDrive and SirsiDynix to deliver eResource Central integration
Library Technology Guides reports that “…SirsiDynix announced its intent to integrate the OverDrive API toolkit into the soon-to-be-released eResource Central. SirsiDynix’ eResource Central will provide one-click electronic resource and e-book delivery. The initiative with OverDrive is a major step forward in the project, making available OverDrive content in a meaningful integration that will benefit both libraries and their users…”
Talis launches new digitisation software service for universities
Library Technology Guides also reports that Talis has announced “the launch of its new software service – Talis Aspire Digitised Content. Developed with the collaboration of university library partners, The Copyright Licensing Agency, and using trusted data supplied via the OCLC xISBN service, the new software service will help universities and colleges in the United Kingdom manage complex digitisation workflows, and help ensure they are compliant with copyright legislation...”

In case you missed it last week ACRL announced “the publication of the fourth installment in the association’s Active Guides series Pay it Forward: Mentoring New Information Professionals by Mary Ann Mavrinac and Kim Sytmest… ACRL Active Guides address professional and workplace issues. Other titles in the series include “Life-Work Balance,” “Influencing without Authority” and “Conversations that Work: Conducting Performance Assessments.”
