2 Responses to ATG “I Wonder” Wednesday: Should traditional publishers and scholarly presses provide services to enable faculty to self-publish?

Forgive what is surely just a lack of imagination on my part, but if publishers are providing services to enable people to publish their work, how is this not just the traditional work of publishing? And where does self-publishing come into it? Or does this question just turn on a really contrived sense of what traditional publishing means? I don’t even know where to begin in responding to the poll; I’m not even sure what you’re asking.

The question tried asking whether traditional publishers should offer services to faculty similar to those services being offered by folks like Smashwords and Booktango to independent authors of popular fiction and non-fiction. This might be particularly relevant in the self-publishing of textbooks and instructional materials but it might also extend to self-publishing research liked data sets; surveys and maybe even monographs and articles.
