The J. Murrey Atkins Library at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking an informed, collaborative, user-oriented professional committed to revealing archival collections using technology. The successful candidate will represent J. Murrey Atkins Library in the Special Collections Department managing and supervising collection management functions, including setting policies, procedures, workflows and guidelines for all processing activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Manages the accessioning program and tracks donor correspondence for accessions.
  • Coordinates with Digital Programs Archivist for the accessioning, arrangement, and description of born digital records.
  • Ensures appropriate archival housing for collections.
  • Identifies potential archival collections and collaboratively reviews collection policies.
  • Collaborates with the Digital Programs Archivist and other relevant members of the Library and University community to develop digital content from collection materials.
  • Maintains statistics, reports, and other metrics to improve collection management functions.
  • Coordinates basic preservation activities for archival material in multiple formats.
  • Coordinates with the Digital Programs Archivist to manage the use and technical service functions of archival database(s), such as Archivists’ Toolkit.
  • Manages arrangement and description functions, including setting policies, procedures, workflows, and guidelines for all processing activities regardless of format.
  • Manages and directs creation of finding aids and coordinates with Digital Programs Archivist to manage workflow to upload records into library online catalog and other discovery tools, adhering to regional and national best practices and standards for description including DACS, EAD, and other relevant schema.
  • Creates informational content about archival collections in print, on the web and using social media.
  • Provides reference and research services to the University community in a variety of mediums including instruction.
  • Participates in professional activities and in library and university faculty governance.
  • Supports and participates in other work of the department as assigned

Full-time (Work schedule may include evenings and weekends)

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Provides cataloging, original and copy, for manuscript collections, rare books, university archives, oral histories, local documents, analytics, and other special materials as needed.  Provides, maintains, and enhances metadata for digital materials.
  • Provides leadership in developing new communications methods and workflow to handle questions related to original cataloging and authority work.
  • Manipulates metadata to provide multiple access points for library resources.
  • Develops and provides training to library staff regarding resource description and metadata management.
  • Provides authority control and authority records as needed during the cataloging process.
  • Resolves problems in areas related to expertise, both for support staff and in the online catalog and other discovery tools. 
  • Participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of cataloging and metadata policies, standards, goals, procedures, and workflows.
  • Develops review methods for records of all Special Collections materials and assists in implementation of reviews  Oversees quality control for non-MARC metadata processes and projects as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge of evolving cataloging and metadata standards and practices, like EAD and RDA, linked data, semantic web applications, ontologies, and RDF.
  • Serves as resource for staff in other areas across the library in doing non-serial cataloging.
  • Participates in professional activities and in library and university faculty governance.
  • Supports and participates in other work of the department as assigned.
  • Possibly supervise students and up to two SPA staff.
