Petition to Leave Georgia State Archive Open to the Public
As has been reported in the press, Georgia is closing the State Archives. It is the only state in the nation to cut this historic service. A petition has been started asking Governor Nathan Deal to leave the state archives open to the public. So far, over 12,000 supporters have signed the petition. There is also Facebook page where supporters can make their feelings known.
Brill Completes Acquisition of KITLV Press
Brill, the international scholarly publisher, has now completed the acquisition of Leiden-based KITLV Press.
Following an earlier announcement, Brill has now completed the acquisition of all publishing activities of KITLV Press, the Dutch publisher of Asian and Caribbean studies. The acquisition includes two prestigious open access journals—Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde / Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Southeast Asia and Oceania (published since 1853) and New West Indian Guide / Nieuwe West-Indische Gids (published since 1919)—in addition to the complete book list of some 450 titles.
Wiley Signs Collaboration Agreement with the Asian Federation of Biotechnology
“John Wiley & Sons, Inc., has announced the signing of a new collaboration agreement between Biotechnology Journal and the Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB). From 2013 the Federation will contribute two special issues to the journal annually, while representatives from the AFOB will join the editorial board… As a partner journal of the AFOB, the Biotechnology Journal will work with the Federation to disseminate scientific knowledge from Asian research communities to a global audience by dedicating special issues to research and breakthroughs on topics that are relevant to all biotechnologists…”
Kirtsaeng v. Wiley and the Threat to Library Lending: ARL to Host Webcast
“The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) will host a webcast on October 16, 2012, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. eastern time, to discuss the Kirtsaeng v. Wiley case, the first-sale doctrine, and what’s at stake for libraries and others. The discussion will be moderated by Brandon Butler, Director of Public Policy Initiatives at ARL, and will feature discussion from:
- Jonathan Band, of policybandwidth, an expert in copyright law and the author of the Library Copyright Alliance amicus brief in the Kirtsaeng case
- Carrie Russell, Director of the Program on Public Access to Information at the American Library Association’s Office for Information Technology Policy, and a widely respected expert on libraries and copyright
- Kevin Smith, Scholarly Communications Officer at Duke University, a lawyer and librarian who has written about the Kirtsaeng case for Library Journal and on his blog, Scholarly Communications @ Duke…”

Elliott Shore Named ARL Executive Director
“The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Board of Directors has appointed Elliott Shore as Executive Director of the Association, effective January 1, 2013. Dr. Shore is currently Chief Information Officer, Constance A. Jones Director of Libraries, and Professor of History at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.
ARL President Winston Tabb, the Sheridan Dean of University Libraries and Museums at Johns Hopkins University, announced Dr. Shore’s appointment via e-mail to the ARL membership. “I am very pleased to announce, on behalf of the ARL Board, that Elliott Shore has accepted our offer to become the next ARL Executive Director,” he wrote. “Elliott’s extensive experience as a librarian and library director; his intense engagement in current research library leadership development programs; his experience as a CIO and active participant in EDUCAUSE; and his energy, enthusiasm, and strong commitment to collaboration with our members and strategic partners make him an ideal Executive Director for ARL at this point in our history…”
Library Journal Names Michael P. Kelley as Editor-in-Chief
“Media Source, Inc., announced today that Michael P. Kelley, currently Executive Editor of News and Features for Library Journal, has been named Editor-in-Chief of Library Journal (LJ), effective today. Kelley replaces long-time LJ Editor-in-Chief Francine Fialkoff…
Kelley holds an MSLIS degree and brings more than 25 years in journalism, including nine years as a staff editor at the New York Times. He started in 2010 as news editor and rose quickly. “It’s never easy to replace a predecessor, and in this particular instance it is impossible, but I will do my best to honor the traditions of LJ while also, I hope, help prepare it for the future,” Kelley said…”
