Springer acquires Canopus Academic Publishing’s book portfolio

“STM publisher Springer Science+Business Media has acquired the works of Canopus Academic Publishing Ltd. (CAP), a UK-based physics and astronomy publisher, effective July 16, 2012. CAP is a sister company of Canopus Publishing Ltd. The acquired assets consist of more than 50 published and contracted, or planned, monographs, proceedings, and major reference works such as the recently published Handbook of Visual Display Technology. The titles will become part of Springer’s physics portfolio…”

ebrary Stengthens Strategic E-book Acquisition Program for Community and Career Colleges

The database now includes a growing selection of more than 26,800 titles with unlimited, multi-user access for both on-campus and distance learning in subjects like business, computer science, and health…”

Census Bureau API Lets Developers Create Custom Apps

Information Today reports that  “the U.S. Census Bureau launched a new online service that makes key demographic, socioeconomic, and housing statistics more accessible than ever before. The Census Bureau’s first-ever public Application Programming Interface (API) allows developers to design web and mobile apps to explore or learn more about America’s changing population and economy.

The new API lets developers customize Census Bureau statistics into web or mobile apps that provide users quick and easy access from two popular sets of statistics:

  • 2010 Census (Summary File 1), which includes detailed statistics on population, age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, household relationship, and owner/renter status, for a variety of geographic areas down to the level of census tracts and blocks.
  • 2006-2010 American Community Survey (5-year estimates), which includes detailed statistics on a rich assortment of topics (education, income, employment, commuting, occupation, housing characteristics and more) down to the level of census tracts and block groups.

Sage launches Mobile Media & Communication journal

SAGE today announced the launch of Mobile Media & Communication in January 2013.  Mobile Media & Communication will be a peer-reviewed forum for international, interdisciplinary academic research on the dynamic field of mobile media and communication. Co-edited by Rich Ling (IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark), Veronika Karnowski (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany), Thilo von Pape (University of Hohenheim, Germany) and Steve Jones (University of Illinois at Chicago, USA), the journal will focus on research with a technical, economic, and design aspect that help to enlighten the social dimensions of mobile communication... GSW’s New Deputy Executive Director

Connie Aschinger Has Joined the Rittenhouse Book Distributors Sales Team

Rittenhouse Book Distributors, Inc. is pleased to announce that Connie Aschinger has joined the company’s field sales team. Aschinger will manage Midwest accounts and is active now within that territory.

“Connie is a great addition to our sales team, and I look forward to having her work with our Midwest accounts,” said Nicole Gallo, Executive Director of Sales and Marketing at Rittenhouse. “She will be an asset to Rittenhouse, and she’s the perfect fit for our professional, knowledgeable and seasoned sales team.”

Aschinger previously worked as the Rittenhouse Midwest Sales Representative in the 1990s and established herself as one of the company’s most engaged and enthusiastic Representatives. After pursing other professional goals and raising her four sons, the time was right for her to return to the book industry.
