News and Announcements for the Ides of March
Today’s menu: the AAP hears from librarians; Syracuse library dean named to NMLSB; EBSCO adds Haz-Map to ExPub databases; fall out from Amazon vs IPG; a new feature in Google+ Hangouts; and NoveList and EBSCO team up on a new product.
Librarians Reach Out to Publishers at AAP Conference
According to DigitalShift “a trifecta of librarians presented their views on how libraries and publishers can collaborate” at the Association of American Publishers (AAP) annual meeting. One of the key concerns was “the vexed question of ebook sales… While expressing patrons’ frustration and confusion with libraries that don’t have ebooks which are generally available, Jim Neal, vice president for information services and university librarian, Columbia University; American Library Association (ALA) President Molly Raphael; and Dr. Anthony W. Marx, president and CEO of the New York Public Library (NYPL) all emphasized that the relationship between publishers and libraries neither needs to be, nor should be, adversarial. “There is a rhetoric of conflict and alienation that seems to overlook the fundamental symbiosis,” said Neal.”
InfoDocket highlights this article from Syracuse University that notes “Suzanne E. Thorin, dean of libraries and University librarian at Syracuse University, was nominated to the National Museum and Library Services Board by President Obama on March 12. She is one of three individuals nominated by the president to serve as an adviser to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) on general policy and practices, and on selections for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The board includes the IMLS director and deputy directors, and 20 members of the general public with demonstrated expertise and commitment to libraries or museums.”
Occupational Health Content Integrated into EBSCO’s ExPub Databases
According to a post in Information Today, Haz-Map: Information on Hazardous Chemicals and Occupational Diseases
by Jay A. Brown, M.D., M.P.H. has been added “to the ExPub database from EBSCO Publishing. Haz-Map is designed to assist professionals seeking information about the health effects of exposure to chemicals and biological agents in the workplace“ “references hundreds of resources; it links jobs and hazardous job tasks with occupational diseases and their symptoms. Haz-Map contains profiles on thousands of chemicals—focusing on uses, adverse effects, and other information needed for exposure assessment. Each chemical is linked to associated industrial processes and nonoccupational activities. Each chemical is also linked to any of the 225 occupational diseases in the database in which a causal relationship has been established.”
As Amazon and IPG’s Fight Continues, One Client’s Sales Fall By 40%
PaidContent.org reports that although “it’s been a few weeks since Amazon removed the Kindle versions of 5,000 titles from distributor Independent Publishers Group, … IPG has not capitulated to Amazon’s demand for better terms.” Now San Antonio-based Wings Press, who is suffering significant lose of sales “has launched a Change.org petition to “stop Amazon’s assault on independent publishers and distributors.”” Bryce Milligan, publisher of Wings Press, writes, “Amazon’s recent actions have already cut the sales of the small press I run by 40 percent.” See Also: Why Amazon’s Kindle Battle With IPG Matters
According to this post in GalleyCat, “Google+ has added a useful new feature to Google+ Hangouts, allowing you to share documents inside a video chat on the social network. Using the new tool, you could host a live video workshop with your writing group, work on a script with a friend or discuss line edits with your editor. The whole meeting can take place in a live video chat, allowing participants to join from around the country.”
