U.S. Warns Apple, Publishers: … Alleging Collusion Over E-Book Pricing
“The Justice Department has warned Apple Inc. and five of the biggest U.S. publishers that it plans to sue them for allegedly colluding to raise the price of electronic books, according to people familiar with the matter.” Attempts are being made to reach a settlement before the suit gets to court. “If successful, such a settlement could have wide-ranging repercussions for the industry, potentially leading to cheaper e-books for consumers. However, not every publisher is in settlement discussions…”

Thieme E-Book Library Keeps on Growing
“Thieme’s E-Book Library has recently expanded with the addition of titles in the areas of anatomy, complementary medicine, dermatology, neurology, and toxicology. Some of the most popular features of the site include offline viewing, as well as the ability to set up personalized accounts.”
Arlington Public Library (VA) Debuts Digital Archive
The Library Technology Guides website reports that the “Arlington Public Library’s new online digital archive is now available… to students, researchers, genealogists, and the Arlington community.” Access is being provided… “to the digitized portions of the Library’s rich local history collections through Content Pro, Innovative Interfaces’ digital collection management solution. Digitized collections include Arlington County Government Photographs, 1915-1997; Arlington Structures and Places, 1996-2006; Arlington’s Changing Scene, 1997-2010; Department of Health Annual Report Photographs, 1938-1973; and Photographs of the Negro Recreation Section, 1948-1955.”
Archive Watch: T.C. Boyle’s Papers Go to Texas
“The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin announced today that it has acquired the papers… the novelist and short-story writer T.C. Boyle. The author of 22 books of fiction, including The Road to Wellville, Tortilla Curtain, World’s End, and When the Killing’s Done, Mr. Boyle is a professor of English at the University of Southern California. At Texas, his papers will join those of David Foster Wallace, Don DeLillo, Denis Johnson, Jayne Anne Phillips, and Bruce Sterling, among many others whose archives are housed at the center.”
Syracuse Launches Pinterest Contest for the New Librarianship
“Joyce Valenza details the challenge to Create a Future of Librarianship Pinterest Board, sponsored by the School of Information Studies, on her blog NeverEndingSearch.” Ms Valenza reports that “in the spirit of Pinterest Challenges, the iSchool at Syracuse University just announced a forward-thinking, library-flavored Pinterest challenge. Participants are invited to share their new library vision on Pinterest. The Pinterest Contest for the New Librarianship is a search for a a few good boards that define and illustrate the future of our profession.”
(Pinterest is a virtual pinboard for online images that brings people together over shared interests.)
