Today’s news focuses on Apple‘s major foray into etextbooks; Springer’s OA journals under Creative Commons Attribution license; a Credo and McFarland agreement; IGI Global partners with CLOCKSS and the Gale/National Geographic archive agreement.
Apple Introduces IBooks 2, IBooks Author, ITunes U App In Push To Transform Textbooks, Education
Apple is aiming to reinvent the textbook according to the Huffington Post and other numerous websites. “Apple executives introduced two new applications that the company hopes will revolutionize the way textbooks are created and consumed: iBook Author, a brand new application for Mac intended for textbook writers and publishers to create iPad-optimized textbooks, and iBooks 2, an update to the iBooks app with several new note-taking and study features. ”
According to another article in Business Week the new Apple e-textbooks “can have embedded video, interactive pictures, as well as features for highlighting texts and creating flash cards.” Check out both articles for more details.
Springer Open Choice Adopts Creative Commons Attribution License
According to Information Today “Springer is bringing Open Choice, its hybrid open access (OA) option, into line with the fully OA journals published by BioMed Central and SpringerOpen. As a result, all OA content at Springer will be published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license.”
McFarland and Credo Sign Agreement

IGI Global Preserves with the CLOCKSS Archive
“IGI Global … has partnered with the CLOCKSS Archive to preserve their e-journals and e-books in CLOCKSS’s geographically and geopolitically distributed network of redundant archive nodes, located at 12 major research libraries around the world. By archiving with CLOCKSS, IGI Global has committed to the preservation of their e-journals and e-books. This action provides for content to be freely available to everyone after a “trigger event” and ensures an author’s work will be maximally accessible and useful over time.”
“Gale … announced an agreement to provide an online archive of more than 100 years of National Geographic magazine. Available to libraries this spring, National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1888-1994 will include all issues of the magazine in a fully searchable and intuitive interface…”
