NISO Launches Open Discovery Initiative
NISO has recently voted to accept the Open Discovery Initiative as a work group within its structure. Evolving from a meeting at the annual ALA Conference in New Orleans, the Open Discovery Initiative consisted of librarians, publishers, and other stakeholders concerned with the development of index based discovery systems like Summon, Primo Central, EBSCO Discovery Services and OCLC’s WorldCat Local. According to this article, NISO is now seeking to “constitute the membership and establish the leadership of the work group. Individuals interested in participating in the initiative should contact Nettie Lagace (nlagace@niso.org). A mailing list has been established at www.niso.org/lists/opendscovery/.”
Google Scholar Opens Up Its Citations
Google Scholar is now offering a free citation service that Google claims is “a simple way for authors to compute their citation metrics and track them over time.” The system uses “the widely used h-index; the i-10 index, which is simply the number of articles with at least ten citations; and, of course, the total number of citations to your articles.”
This article also mentions that Microsoft Academic Search has made some impressive enhancements, a development first noted by Gary Price in INFOdocket.
