Caught My Eye: Sociology and Wikipedia
According to this article from Inside Higher ED, American Sociological Association president, Erik Olin Wright is announcing “the Sociology in Wikipedia Initiative: a formal call to sociologists to help improve and expand Wikipedia entries that might benefit from their expertise and consider assigning their students to do the same.” Wright is making it official in A Call to Duty: ASA and the Wikipedia Initiative on the association’s online newsletter. This dovetails with the approach advocated by Phoebe Ayers in the June 2011 issue (p. 48) of Against the Grain. Ms. Ayers, a librarian on the Wikipedia Foundation Board, suggested that librarians take an active role in enhancing the bibliographies in Wikipedia as well as contribute to articles in which they had expertise.
