DCL and Gale Partner for eContent
In an obvious move away from the current practice of licensing ebooks, Douglas County Libraries and Gale/Cengage Learning have signed an agreement “allowing for library purchase of Gale eBooks effectively replicating the model by which libraries purchase print materials and applying it to electronic content.” According to Jamie LaRue, director of Douglas County Libraries the ownership of ebooks will enable the library to “integrate them more seamlessly into our collections, and customize those collections to our communities and to our patrons’ needs.” On the positive side for Gale, the library has committed “to purchasing one additional copy for every four holds.” The library will also provide patrons “links to make immediate purchases of their own” from Gale.
Douglas County Library patrons can access these newly purchased ebooks “through a browser on a private library-hosted cloud, or through any device capable of reading Digital Rights Management (DRM)-protected files.”
