Maney Publishing appoints new Executive Publisher in North America

Maney Publishing is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Kathryn Rutz to the position of Executive Publisher.

In her new role Kathy will complement the work of existing Executive Publisher, Kimberly Martin. The appointment will reinforce Maney’s corporate profile in North America, strengthen acquisitions in areas such as materials science and engineering, and build on our existing contacts in the US.

Kathy, whose satellite office is in upstate New York, near Ithaca and Binghamton, will work with Kimberly to further develop society relations and business throughout North America and will offer an additional presence at conferences in the US, leading to new opportunities and growth for the company.

 Nominations are being sought for the Esther J. Piercy Award

Nominations are being accepted for the 2012 Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) awards for professional achievement.  One of these awards is the Esther J. Piercy Award.

“This award is given to recognize the contribution to those areas of librarianship included in library collections and technical services by a librarian with not more than 10 years of professional experience who has shown outstanding promise for continuing contribution and leadership.”

 E-book Sales Doubled in July (their smallest increase of the year)

“E-book sales had their smallest  increase of the year in July, while the adult hardcover segment had one of its strongest months, according to the AAP’s monthly sales report. E-book sales from 17 reporting publishers rose 105.3% in the month, to $82.6 million…”

Research Librarians Consider the Risks and Rewards of Collaboration

The Association of Research Libraries’ membership meeting held in Washington, DC last week focused on “big-scale collaborations and digital-era collection strategies.”  Attendees received updates on “ambitious research and preservation projects like the HathiTrust digital repository and the proposed Digital Public Library of America.”  They also heard about the continuing “hybrid” nature of research from scholars like Charles Kurzman, a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who talked about his experiences in “what it’s like to do research in the current environment, where many resources are available via a simple Google search—but many are not.”

SpringerLink Expanding Ebook Collection to Cover All Titles Back to 1846

Springer plans to digitize its book catalog back to the day Julius Springer published his first title in 1846. “The digitization project will affect an estimated 65,000 books. Some 70% of them are in English with only 30% in German and a few in Dutch. The collection will include business and professional titles as well as sci-tech with more than 20% medical. It also covers 17 imprints, including U.S. publishers such as Apress and Copernicus.”  The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Ex Libris Signs with Publishers and Aggregators to Add Their Content to the Primo Central Index

Ex Libris® Group… announced “that it has signed agreements with numerous content providers to add their collections to the Primo Central Index. Primo Central will now provide access to Bridgeman Education content; the ECONIS database at the German National Library of Economics—Leibniz Information Centre for Economics

(ZBW); the Manuscriptorium Digital Library at the National Library of the Czech Republic; the China/Asia On Demand collection from Oriprobe Information Services; three C. H. Beck journals; and content from Woodhead Publishing, the World Bank, and World Scientific.

Real-time search and improved hashtag support

Google has announced “two new features: 1) real-time search results; and 2) improved hashtag support. In adding these features Google is “trying to make it easier to follow and contribute to live events on Google+, including breaking news, sporting events, and many others.”
