Ithaka S+R Announces New Program: Research Support Services for Scholars
Ithaka S+R is pleased to announce a new program, Research Support Services for Scholars, that will comprise a series of discipline-specific research projects aimed to provide critically needed research about the evolving behavior and needs of scholars to the information support service providers who work with them. Based on this research, Ithaka S+R will make recommendations regarding the future of support services for scholars and how information service providers—such as libraries, computing support centers, scholarly societies, and publishers—can support their needs.
Taylor & Francis Online goes mobile!
Taylor & Francis is offering a new service called Taylor & Francis Online Mobile “which provides mobile access to the 1,600 Journals and Reference Works available via Taylor & Francis Online from today.” “This new service is free to use” and …allows users to access knowledge via iPhone, Android, Blackberry and tablet devices.”

Join us this month for reviews of the labyrinthine “1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die” website; a novel and a scholarly monograph both addressing music and musicians during the Holocaust; videos of Robert Schumann’s rarely performed Manfred, Leonard Bernstein conducting Shostakovich, and Claudio Arrau playing Romantic masterworks; and a variety of new sound recordings that range from Canadian folk rock to Indian electronica to Spanish reggae.
Celebrate the Guadalajara International Book Fair with ALA-FIL FREE PASS Program
ALA and the Guadalajara International Book Fair are partnering for the 13th year to provide support for ALA members to attend the 25th Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) from November 26 – December 4, 2011. This year’s invited country is Germany.
The deadline for application to the ALA/FIL FREE PASS Program is October1, 2011. The Guadalajara Book Fair is offering an additional $100 to the first 100 applicants who submit their airfare confirmation.
Major Publishers Join Indiana U. Project That Requires Students to Use E-Textbooks
Today McGraw-Hill Higher Education announced that it has agreed to join the e-textbook project at Indiana University which has been in pilot phase for more than a year. The project “requires certain students to purchase e-textbooks and negotiates unusually low prices by promising publishers large numbers of sales.” Other publishers also participating in the project include, John Wiley & Sons; Bedford, Freeman & Worth Publishing Group; W.W. Norton; and Flat World Knowledge.
