Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The Rare Book Collection Assistant (RBCA) is a staff member of the Rare Book Collection Department at Wilson Special Collections Library and reports to the Curator of Rare Books. The Rare Book Collection contains literary and historical holdings of national and international significance ranging from clay tablets to medieval manuscripts to modern printings. Collection strengths include English and Irish literature, the New World cronistas, French history, fine printing, Mayan archaeology, Spanish and Catalan drama, World Wars I and II, the Beat movement, the Greek and Latin classics, as well as American popular culture. The RBC collects, preserves, and provides access to its extensive holdings.
Under the direction of the Curator, the RBCA has primary responsibility for all technical acquisitions processes, including specialized bibliographic searching of titles selected by the Curator; keying bibliographic and order information into Millennium; ensuring receipt of materials from Monographic services and payment; retrieving and receiving gift materials from donors; and ensuring the transfer of material to Technical Services staff for cataloging. The RBCA coordinates announcements, publicity, and logistics for lectures, special displays, and other events, and plays a key role in the planning and logistics of the fall 2012 Mayan programming. Under the Curator’s direction, the RBCA maintains the RBC web site and creates new content, including images and text, and maintains and organizes all paper and electronic files and statistics for the Department. The RBCA supervises student assistants and instructs them in bibliographic searching. The RBCA performs public service in the Wilson Special Collections Reading Room, working there approximately two hours per week and two weekends per semester.
The Rare Book Collection Assistant must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English, as well as excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. The RBCA works with a wide variety of people-co-workers of all levels throughout the library, faculty, students, US and international vendors, US and international colleagues, donors, and alumni-and must possess excellent interpersonal skills. The RBCA must have at least intermediate level reading knowledge of Spanish and French, and proficiency with Windows, MS Word, Excel, email, html, and Adobe Photoshop. The RBCA must be able to work long hours at a PC and lift and move heavy boxes (up to 40 lbs.)
This position is being recruited at the Journey Competency level under the Career Banding program. The hiring range for this position is $30,000–$34,000.
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience working with rare books and knowledge of the book as object.
