June 22, 2011, Wiesbaden, Germany – HARRASSOWITZ, international booksellers and subscription agents, announces the retirement of Dr. Knut Dorn as Senior Managing Partner and Director of Sales at the end of this year. His last ALA meeting in this position will be at the 2011 Annual Conference on June 23-28 in New Orleans, LA.
Knut Dorn received his Ph.D. in English and American Studies from Goethe University Frankfurt. After a two-year internship in Collection Services in the Acquisitions Department of Sterling Memorial Library, Yale University, he joined HARRASSOWITZ in 1964. Initially acting as a Customer Service and Marketing Associate, he was accepted into the partnership and assumed responsibility for Library Services in 1972.
In the 1990s, under Dr. Dorn’s management, the company started providing electronic journal subscriptions. Today HARRASSOWITZ has become a leading supplier of electronic and print journal subscriptions worldwide. Monographic services also expanded during his tenure with new title announcements in electronic format, enhanced approval plans, fine-tuned standing order and firm order fulfillment and the recent offering of e-books. Of his many accomplishments, Dr. Dorn will especially be remembered for establishing HARRASSOWITZ’s music scores service. HARRASSOWITZ is now the largest European music dealer to the academic library market.
Due in no small part to Dr. Dorn’s leadership and his dedication to HARRASSOWITZ’s high quality of service, HARRASSOWITZ has grown substantially as a company. Customers often note the time, patience, and graciousness that Dr. Dorn extends to each individual. Above all, Dr. Dorn, as the ambassador of the company, has built strong relationships with library staff at all levels ̶ bibliographers, acquisitions librarians, library directors, and support personnel ̶ as well as with vendors and publishers. These relationships, together with the philosophy of exemplary service that has guided HARRASSOWITZ for over 138 years, will ensure that even after Dr. Dorn’s retirement the values that have made HARRASSOWITZ successful for so long will continue to be embraced.
For many years, Dr. Dorn has been active in the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (the German Book Trade Association) and has been a longstanding member and chairman of the advisory committee of the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (the German National Library). Throughout the years, Dr. Dorn has attended many library and professional meetings in North America, Europe and Australia, and he has often noted that with just a few exceptions, he has never missed an ALA since the late 1960s. He has also been a major supporter of ACRL/ WESS (Association of College and Research Libraries/ Western European Studies Section) and has participated in many Music Library Association and International Association of Music Librarians conferences. As HARRASSOWITZ is a sponsor of the ALCTS Acquisitions Section’s Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award, Dr. Dorn has presented the award every year for the past 15 years.
“Over the years Dr. Dorn has used his untiring energy to build customer loyalty that has enabled HARRASSOWITZ to become a recognized leader in the export of scholarly materials to libraries around the world,” said Friedemann Weigel, Director of Information Systems & Library Services Subscriptions and Managing Partner since 1986. “Dr. Dorn’s efforts have laid the foundation for our continued success. We wish him all the best in the years to come, as we seek to build on his many achievements.” And Ruth Becker-Scheicher, Director of Accounting and Managing Partner since 1990, added: “Although we are all sad to see Dr. Dorn go, he has worked hard during his entire career and deserves the opportunity to finally have more free time.”
Dr. Dorn, who will remain a partner in the company, looks forward to spending more time pursuing his interests in book and wine collecting. As part of the company’s succession plan that was initiated two years ago, Dr. Nadja Dorn-Lange, Director of Library Services Books, will succeed her father on the
Management Board, joining Friedemann Weigel and Ruth Becker-Scheicher. Friedemann Weigel will take over Dr. Dorn’s responsibilities as Director of Sales.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Dorn for more than 45 years of outstanding service to the library community and in wishing him well as he prepares for his retirement from his responsibilities as Managing Partner and Director of Sales.
