“Publishing the Long Civil Rights Movement”

UNC Press seeks a full-time program assistant for its “Publishing the Long Civil Rights Movement” project, a collaboration with the UNC-Chapel Hill Library and the Southern Oral History Program. This project is funded through December 2012 by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. The program assistant, reporting to the project director, will assist the project director and one UNC Press acquisitions editor in all project-related activities during the grant period.
Duties include assisting the project director with meeting planning; drafting routine correspondence with project stakeholders; preparing memos, proposals, and regular reports to the project steering committee and project funders; preparing promotional and other materials related to the project; maintaining the project web site; research related to online publishing practices, author and customer content preferences, and market opportunities for new content products; and a variety of clerical and other tasks.
Working with the project’s acquisitions editor, the program assistant will also assist in communicating with prospective and existing authors; evaluating content proposed for publication; tracking the peer review process, soliciting readers, and initiating payment of honoraria and following up as necessary; preparing contracts; researching opportunities for new publications as well as sales and marketing figures for existing publications; reviewing and preparing documentation of permissions; photocopying, filing, and mailing; and other tasks as needed.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in a humanities or social science discipline; excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills; superb interpersonal communication, organizational, and follow-through skills; strong word processing, database, internet, and other computer skills; flexibility; and a demonstrated ability to work under deadline pressure with minimal supervision, to work on many projects at once, and to prioritize tasks. Previous experience in academic publishing or a related field is strongly prefered, and candidates with a demonstrated interest in new technologies and methods of publication are strongly encouraged to apply.
