James Galbraith

From S. Jay Askuvich and Scott Alan Smith:

It is with great sadness that we must report the death of James Galbraith. Jamie passed away at 2:40 am local time in Liverpool, Nova Scotia on 31. March 2010.

Jamie was born on the 12th of May, 1942 in the village of Brevig, Isle of Barra. He earned his library degree at Strathclyde University, and went on to work in libraries in the UK and in Canada. Jamie went on to work for Blackwell’s, and served in several roles, including Vice President of Sales and President of the Boley Subscription Agency. Jamie was a great bookman; he will be best remembered for his compassion, his great good humor, and his devilish wit. Those who were fortunate enough to know him will mourn his passing and celebrate his life, and think of him always with deep affection.

Services were held on 5. April in Liverpool. A more detailed account of his remarkable life will appear in this journal in the coming weeks. For now, please join with us in extending our condolences to his family, and recalling with honor the great joy he brought to our lives.

  1. I worked with Jamie for many years in his role as Blackwell rep. He was such a wonderful person to do business with, but he never let business get in the way of pleasure! We shared many meals, much laughter, and visited many pubs together. Although we lived on opposite sides of the country, he was often in my thoughts, and always sent a Christmas message even after he retired. My heartfelt sympathy to his family, especially to his partner, my friend, Eileen. My thoughts are with you.
